The Foundling Museum

"London's First Public Art Gallery"

By: Eoin Evans

More than London's first public art gallery, The Foundling Museum is rich in history as it stands as the Britain's earliest home for abandoned children. The Foundling Museum is a place which inspires visitors to experience art, social history, philanthropy, and music. The museum was first named as the Foundling Hospital, but it is now a favourable place for family fun, school learning, adult post graduate studies, and now musical entertainment.

Family Fun at the Foundling Museum

When accompanied by their parents, The Museum is a centre place for children to find creative ways to express what they see in the collection of work. The museum reception will direct families to the free and paid activities that will help them explore the museum's collection. On family fun day the Foundling Museum hosts fun activities for children aged 3-12 years old, which may require some supervision from adults. The activities help to create a dialogue between families to discuss the displays, which tell the story of Britain's abandoned children and more. Family fun at the Foundling Museum includes some days for drop-ins. There are even activities for the museum's youngest visitors, as well as reading activities and opportunities to explore the beautiful Coram's Fields.

School Learning

The Museum is a propelling place for school aged children to learn. Due to several curriculum-linked sessions, students can explore the eighteenth, nineteenth, and the early twentieth centuries, as experienced by the abandoned children of the Foundling Hospital. The National Curriculum is supported by the fun and interactive studies at the Foundling Museum, and it also considers individual learning needs. Sessions expand to include Foundation through AS level, by including activities such as drawing, drama, interactive storytelling, and dressing up.

Adult Post Graduate Studies

King's College London, with partnerships from the British Museum, offers an 18th century MA postgraduate course, which is supported by the Foundling museum and its collections. The course invites students to explore art of the 18th century, analyse objects, texts, and ideas through a framework of material culture, intellectual networks, and race, gender, and class issues. However, the students will work with a core module to study the construction of Enlightenment from past to present.

Musical Entertainment at Britain's Foundling Museum

As an additional programme of exploration, the London Baroque Community Orchestra (LCBO) has been formed, based on the history of the Foundling Museum. The London Baroque Community Orchestra was founded by Dr. Zak Ozmo, a scholar and musical director. The programme aims to present regular high-level musical performances to the public, and it will present historical training in musical performances to all members. The orchestra is supported by period-instrument ensemble members, and it explores Baroque music and other loved masterpieces. The LCBO will also explore the musical collection within the Gerald Coke Handel collection of the Museum.
